France, Japan Give Female Jockeys a Special Weight Allowance, Female Jockey Mounts Double

We have to give credit where it’s due for the Women of Horse Racing, and our Asian neighbors.  First, they install VIP lounges for women only at the race track to encourage attendance.  Their concept?  Bring the girls and the boys will follow to increase attendance.  Early this year, The Japan Racing Association introduced new weight allowance regulations for female jockeys that went into effect January 2019.

The previous regulations regarding weight allowance state that apprentice jockeys, both male and female, who have won less than 30 races are given 3.0kg allowance, those who have won 31 to 50 races are given a 2.0kg allowance, and those who have won 51 to 100 races are given 1.0kg.

Beginning Jan. 1 this year in Japan, female jockeys who have won less than 50 races will be given 4.0kg allowance, those who have won 50 to 100 races will be given 3.0kg, and any female jockey winning more than 101 races will be given a 2.0kg allowance.
